Exhibition Description
Intervention for Kungliga Akademien for de fria konsterna (Stockholm) curated by Marcia Cavalcante, on September 5, 2014.
The philosopher improvises with thought, musicians with music and the painter with colour.
Being there, bringing out colour in the very moment that the philosopher improvises his discourse about what is being accomplished.
Evening programme (running time: approximately 4 hours):
- Jean-Luc Nancy improvises a lesson about improvisation.
- the musicians improvise the music.
- the artist improvises a painting and talks briefly to explain what she is doing.
- Jean-Luc Nancy and Marcia Cavalcante talk about improvisation.
- Jean-Luc Nancy, the musicians and the artist make words, notes and colours appear simultaneously.
Words stated during the evening:
- In the studio I spread a colour on the canvas every day.
- I always make the colour in the same bowl.
- I don’t plan. I proceed. I improvise.
- The colour is transformed, bringing with it a part of the colour from the previous day.
- Painting spans a vital time. It is like breathing.
- Here this evening, I will distribute the process over seven canvases and seven bowls. Seven like the number of musical notes.
- The process accelerates. It becomes a sort of arrhythmia or tachycardia.
- It springs from listening empathetically to the words and the music.
