Glass ("diptych papers-glass")

Since 1999 I have regularly painted with oil pastels and oil sticks on pieces of paper measuring 18 x 26cm. I apply a colour on one of them daily. Each piece of paper consists of three layers of colour. The first is always red, the second a vertical crossing and the third a horizontal one, or vice versa.
Since 2000 I have begun to exhibit these works that I personally always think of as individual pieces, in installations that enter powerfully in relation with the architecture, often covering entire walls.
Since the exhibition at Palazzetto Tito in Venice in 2006 I have begun to consider these works as large walls of paper mosaics.
When I was asked to come up with a project with glass it felt natural to transfer this vision of painting into that of an actual mosaic.
I spent a lot of time at the Orsoni glass foundry to watch the work, looking for harmony with those procedures and trying to absorb within my being something that was already there, adding nothing, forcing nothing.
I thus saw that the way of producing the gold mosaic tiles corresponded to my way of working with painting the pieces of paper: three layers of colour, one on top of the other. The “Diptych” composed of a “Paper Diary” and a “Paper Glass” comes from this approach. Without altering anything, I remained inside the method with which these mosaic tiles are made: you start with the first layer of glass that has a base colour of sea blue, which is determined by the technique. Then you move on to the second layer, which is the gold or silver leaf placed on the first layer, then the last part of blown glass placed on the gold leaf which changes colour every time.
My gesture, my action on the glass was only that of squaring it off with cuts that were always a little different, trying to emphasise a similarity and a correspondence.
