The ‘Substit-issue’ consists of a 1:1-scale photographic reproduction of the wall of the ‘Sedimentary’. The photograph is printed on wood.
The photos of the back of the ‘Sedimentary’, which is where I paint a layer of colour on a ‘Sedimentation’ every day, are taken fairly regularly over the years in order to document the transformations of the imprint that forms around the painting.
Each ‘Substit-issue’ is different from the others because it contains a different moment in the history of the wall.
This work springs from the filiation of the ‘Substitute’ which in turn is the emulation of the ‘Gestureplace’, the space dedicated to my painting in the studio.
The ‘Substit-issue’ comes from the need to take painting towards the exterior along with a trace of the place where it was generated and to bring attention to the work as a witness to a transitory passing. The process is more important than the definitive and closed form; the work is potentially always open and unfinished. Each ‘Substit-issue’ is the crystallisation of the point of an evolution in progress that is never over.
