Introduction

MEETING THE OTHER

OPENING ONESELF UP TO RELATIONSHIP

“Silent dialogue is an index of plurality, but the model is a dialogue with someone else. It is only due to the fact that I can talk to others that I can also talk to myself; in other words that I can think.”
(From Hannah Arendt’s diary, July 1968)

Finding a link with the other, the other intended as a person, the father, the son, an artist, a writer...

At a certain point the solipsistic discourse in the studio, the thing produced in isolation in one’s own space, seeks a way of putting itself in relation with the world.

Through an action, an encounter, a piece of writing, a colour, a work, a project, a dedication, an exhibition... in a emphatic dialogue I look for a link, a a similarity, a resemblance with the other by itself.

In the relationship between two people, it is sometimes possible to create a close contact in the dialogue formed; a silent intimacy that no other kind of relationship manages to replace.

Starting from listening it is possible to identify with the other so intensely that you truly feel a profound understanding.

Or on the contrary, starting from oneself and opening up to the gaze of the other it is possible to ask them to enter your world completely, allowing us to interpret, help and understand each other and even expecting us to be completely bowled over.

Or to approach one another and move in tandem, almost to the extent of coordinating our vital rhythms and even breathing in unison.
