Introduction
ACTING DAILY
The daily actions that mark my time.
“I think that the best way to make a note these things is to represent them chronologically and from my point of view, essentially as a spectator.”
(from Carlo Emilio Gadda’s diary, 23 September 1918)
On Saturday I finished the figure; I dined on 10 ounces of bread, cherries and fish. On Sunday evening, which was the eve of the Holy Spirit, I dined with Bronzino.
(from Pontormo’s Diary, 1555)
I paint differently every day, every hour, every minute, every instant. My paintings record a certain lapse of time.
(From Keith Haring’s journal, New York 14 October 1978)
For years, every day as soon as I get to the studio, the first thing I do is take my camera and go to the canal side. I always take a picture of the same spot. Then I go back inside, put on my work overalls and go towards the bowl. I make a colour and use it to carry out three tasks. I spread it on three surfaces: the “Infinite Painting”, the “Diary” and a “Sedimentation”.
