Enlargement of the painterly gesture
In the work for the Fondazione Querini Stampalia Café in Venice, I translated the painter’s gesture (spreading oil paint on the canvas) into the technique of weaving (creating a colour through the weft and warp), transforming every single layer of paint into a coloured canvas. I went from the canvas as the support of the paint to the canvas as the substance-colour itself. Just as every single brushstroke consists of many gradations of colours, so is the fabric made up of numerous different threads that together create a single mass of colour. From a distance it looks like a large flat, monochrome field of colour, but up close it is possible to see on the surface a pattern that is the enlargement of a detail extracted from one of my paintings. In other words, it is the reproduction of the painterly gesture.
