Genesis and development of the ‘mindsite’
I began to think about the archive when I started painting the “Diaries” in 2006 and I created it over the space of about five years between 2011 and 2016. It will continue to grow and change over time.
In around 2015 I made the decision to link the archive to the site. While I was working on planning the archive, I felt the increasingly urgent need for it to become something public. I felt that the act of archiving was not in itself enough if it did not have the possibility of being in hands of someone else. I realised that everything could come to life only when other people were also able to keep returning to it and reinterpreting it.
The ’Mindsite’ complements the ‘Gestureplace’ where, in the ‘Self-Portrait’ the thinking runs parallel to the practice, in the ‘Archive’ all the material-work formed through the experience accumulates, while the ‘Portrait’ is where there is a search for relations in order to share everything and to be reread through the eyes of the other.
This device is a fluid organism that changes almost every day in terms of contents and also in terms of structure, albeit with a slightly slower rhythm. It is therefore difficult to describe in words, point by point, this constant re-kneading of meaning and this perennial reshaping of the shell, precisely because the variations are assiduous, capillary and countless. I have no trace of the early years, but gradually as I continued and saw that what was happening was increasingly important to make this constant remodelling be perceived, I decided to pull out the works whose contents contain within them a record of all the transformations. Between 2019 and 2020 the ‘Self-Portrait Map’, the ‘Archive Numbers’ and the ‘Miniature Self-Portrait’ were created. These are works-prints that annually record within them the information that marks their various stages.
Since 2020 everything has been made even clearer through a project called ‘Variations of the Mindsite’. It is a cataloguing of the site year by year, as if each past version were archived as a past work to then be represented as new and renewed each time, with the most recent version containing all of the story of the versions that preceded it.
These versions shows, going back in time, how the thoughts have changed and how all of the concretions of the mind have determined my thinking and images layer upon layer.
