Work description and interpretation
Metal structure constituted by 17 shelves. On each shelf are pinned 10 wooden painted slats. Since 2012 all of the "Diaries" that I have painted are placed in a metal structure that I call the “Diarythèque”. This object becomes a sort of folder, an archive of my time that contains the painted “Diaries” up to the present and those that I still have to paint. I thought about all the time that I have left to live and I have accumulated a quantity of wood that corresponds to that amount of time. At first, the painted part is small and the untouched part is big. Over the years this object gradually fills with colour. It’s as though a space has been built that I will fill with my life. The meaning is not of death, of the end, of closure, but of a physical and temporal space where the normal flow of things is abandoned. In October 2020 I shortened the “Diarytheque” by three shelves. There were two reasons for this: to create a height that allowed me to place it in the studio on a raised platform like all the other archivers and to tie in with the rhythm of forming the colour, which over time seems to have gradually settled to around 3-4 panels a year. I realised that there were too many slats to fill. I wanted to keep within an average life span and not one that reaches over 100 years of age.
