Work description and interpretation
Acceleration painted for Lucio Pozzi's project pitturazione di 8 ore / 8-hour paintaction in Milano Il Sogno Bianco /The White Dream h 12:00 – 20:00 / noon to 8PM 10 maggio/ 10 May 2014 Museo di Arte Contemporanea, Lissone (MI) I paint for 8 hours with black paint on white, improvising image clusters onto a 2 x 10 yards canvas. I have painted this kind of imagery in previous Crowd Group paintings. While I am working, every hour on the half hour someone from Lissone hammers a nail into a black area of my painting and hangs on it a small work sent by an artist friend. The guests are: Luca Bertolo, David Lindberg, Filippo Manzini, Maria Morganti, Albano Morandi, Luca Pozzi, Lorenza Sannai, Lynn Umlauf. Two traditional strands of my art meet in this event: painting and one of its theatrical extensions. To paint under the stress of a deadline prompts me to dip deeper in the raw match of thought and feeling. The artist guests’ works, the large room, the chairs randomly placed around, the visitors chatting, make the whole into a collaborative situation, threaded by a tension between the private sphere of painting and the public context of exhibition. Behind me, in the center of the room, Stefano Castagna and Luca Formentini play for 8 hours instruments they have built from scrap, the sounds of which are amplified. Visiting guest musicians play with them for short periods every hour. The event is recorded and broadcast via streaming (by Matteo Frittelli). A real time video will be projected on the back wall until the end of the show.
